Department of State Updates Nonimmigrant Visa Interview Location Policy
The U.S. Department of State has updated its guidance regarding where individuals should schedule interviews for nonimmigrant visas, including tourist and business visas.
Effective immediately, applicants are expected to schedule their interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of nationality or country of residence.
Applicants requesting appointments in a third country may be required to demonstrate that they legally reside there. They should also be aware that appointment availability may be more limited and processing times could be longer.
Important Points
The Department of State also noted:
- Existing appointments generally will not be cancelled.
- Visa application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable if an applicant chooses an inappropriate interview location.
- Limited exceptions remain available for certain diplomatic visas and humanitarian or medical emergencies.
Applicants should always review the specific procedures of the embassy or consulate where they intend to apply before scheduling an appointment.
